27th Annual Southern California Alzheimer's Disease Research Conference
Advances in Dementia Research Across Unique Populations
Activity Details
Activity Name: 27th Annual Southern California Alzheimer's Disease Research Conference
Description: Advances in Dementia Research Across Unique Populations
Needs Assessment: More than 20 million people worldwide suffer from dementia. Dementia is defined as cognitive impairment, including problems in memory and at least one other cognitive domain, that impair activities of daily living. Dementia is sharply on the rise in the United States and other global nations.
Dementia is a costly condition, resulting in lost wages and productivity, not only for afflicted patients, but also the millions of family members and other unpaid caregivers that assist these patients in both basic (e.g., feeding and toileting) and instrumental (e.g., using a telephone) activities of daily living. Although the majority of people with dementia suffer from Alzheimer?s disease, there is increasing recognition that a number of other neurodegenerative conditions result in dementia syndromes and there is a tremendous and urgent need for increased research toward improved diagnosis and treatment for all of these conditions.
The 27th Annual Southern California Alzheimer's Disease Research Conference, Advances in Dementia Research Across Unique Populations, will overview and provide updated state of the art for the research fields focused on a variety of neurodegenerative conditions that result in dementia. The conference will address the impact of Alzheimer's disease and other causes of dementia on society and the striking personal impact the diseases have on families.
Course Objectives: At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:
* Name at least four special populations in which dementia occurs
* Discuss some of the research ongoing in Orange County that targets special dementia populations
* Describe the necessary exclusions in the differential diagnosis of dementia
* List the essential steps in the workup of an older person with cognitive impairment
* Describe an algorithm for distinguishing FTD, DLB, and Alzheimer's disease
* List the included disorders in the FTLD spectrum
* Describe the treatments that are inappropriate for FTD patients
* Name the therapies approved by the FDA for the treatment of DLB
* Describe the psychosocial burden and health risks associated with being a dementia caregiver
* Discuss the differing aspects of caregiving, depending on the diagnosis of the care recipient
* Discuss the implications of prognosis in a mild dementia patient in their 90's
