Providers may have a limited understanding of this free resource for all Californians to intervene with tobacco use and exposure.

BRIEF SUMMARY
The California Smokers' Helpline is a free telephone counseling service operated by UC San Diego. Helping a smoker develop a quit plan and having follow-up support has doubled the chances of a smoker quitting. The services are available in Spanish and 4 Asian languages, can help evaluate for medication options including free nicotine patches if available, and open to friends and families of smokers seeking help.

OBJECTIVE
After viewing the course video, participants should be able to describe the California Smokers' Helpline free telephone counseling services for tobacco users.

Target Audience
This free activity was designed for University of California faculty, staff and students but also open to other healthcare professionals.

Note: all respiratory care practitioners (RCP) wanting RCP credit must 1. select "Respiratory Therapist" as their occupation and 2. enter their RCP number in the evaluation form.

This activity will take approximately 30 minutes to complete. CME credit is obtained upon viewing video, submitting the online evaluation and successfully passing the test. An electronic CME certificate will be available after requirements are completed.

The University of California, Davis Health System is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

Physician Credit: The University of California, Davis Health System designates this educational activity for a maximum of 0.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits ™. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.


AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ acceptable for multidisciplinary team members

Nurses:  For the purpose of recertification, the American Nurses Credentialing Center accepts AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ issued by organizations accredited by the ACCME.  For the purpose of relicensure, the California Board of Registered Nursing accepts AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ (report hours of credit and fill in “CME Category 1” for the provider number).

Physician Assistants: The National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) states that AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ are acceptable for continuing medical education requirements for recertification

Respiratory Care Practitioners (RCP): The Respiratory Care Board of California states that AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ are acceptable for continuing medical education requirements for recertification.
