Global Objective for series
Be aware of the importance of radiation safety as it relates to fluoroscopy practice. When treating patients, physicians often forget to consider the "invisible" threat of radiation. The goal of this activity is to reduce the radiation doses to both patient and staff by describing the radiation hazards and explaining how to reduce exposure.


Activity Objective
At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:
   1. Describe the mechanisms of x-ray interactions, including Rayleigh scattering,
       Compton scattering photoelectric absorption, and pair production.
   2. Predict which interaction mode would be likely to predominate in various imaging procedures
       and the relative probability of photoelectric interactions as a function of x-ray energy and the atomic number of the absorber.
   3. Predict the types, calculate the energies, and explain the characteristic of secondary radiations following
       the x-ray interaction including characteristic x-rays and Auger electrons.
   4. Discuss the impact of each type of interaction on image quality in diagnostic radiology.


This internet enduring material consisting of an article and takes approximately 30 minutes to complete.
CME credit is obtained upon reviewing the lecture, submitting the online evaluation and successfully passing the test. An electronic CME certificate will be available after requirements are completed.
