GAP Nurses play an important role in supporting their patients physical and educational needs, especially at the bedside. Current and passive smokers need to be identified and assisted with educational resources and medications.
BRIEF SUMMARY As the largest group of healthcare professionals, nurses can make a profound difference in reducing death and disability by addressing the physiological and the behavioral aspects of tobacco dependence. Nurses have an important role in identifying current and passive smokers, assisting them with medications to relieve nicotine withdrawal, and educating them about referral resources such as free telephone counseling offered by the California Smokers’ Helpline at UC San Diego.
OBJECTIVE After viewing the course video, participants (nurses) should be able to: 1) Identify how UC nurses can ask and document smoking status 2) Discuss the role of nurses in relieving nicotine withdrawal with medications 3) Describe the UC eReferral for free telephone counseling services offered by the California Smokers' Helpline at UCSD
Target Audience This free activity was designed for University of California faculty, staff and students but also open to other healthcare professionals. Note: all respiratory care practitioners (RCP) wanting RCP credit must 1. select "Respiratory Therapist" as their occupation and 2. enter their RCP number in the evaluation form.
