GAP When treating patients, surgeons and physicians seldom refer patients who smoke to smoking cessation counseling. Causes for this gap: • Misconception that quitting smoking shortly before surgery can increase the risk of pulmonary complications. • Belief that nicotine replacement therapy can increase wound infections and adversely affect wound healing. • Perception that patients are too stressed in the perioperative period to quit smoking.
BRIEF SUMMARY This webinar draws attention to the impact of smoking in the perioperative period. The benefits of quitting smoking in the perioperative period are discussed. The common myths associated with quitting smoking before surgery that create barriers to smoking cessation interventions are also addressed. Finally, the presentation describes the important role that surgeons and anesthesiologists can play in promoting smoking cessation for their patients.
OBJECTIVE After viewing the course video, participants should be able to: 1. Play a critical role in helping surgical patients quit smoking. 2. Understand that brief interventions can markedly increase quit rates. 3. Know how to refer their patients to smoking quit lines.
