Activity Name: Emergency Medicine: Hot Topics 2017
Needs Assessment: Join our internationally-renowned experts from UC Davis Department of Emergency Medicine and enjoy learning in a casual and interactive environment. This educational activity provides an opportunity for physicians involved in the delivery of emergency medicine to review important topics and discuss recent advances. The course also serves as a setting where physicians peripherally involved in emergency care may receive education that will expand their horizons. Emergency departments are the front line of health care in this country, providing an extraordinary public safety function. Health care delivery is changing rapidly and emergency care is no exception. This educational activity provides an opportunity for physicians involved in the delivery of emergency medicine to review important topics and discuss recent advances.
As a result of course participant evaluations and community physician annual needs assessment surveys, the need for cutting edge information about emergency medicine has been identified. The course is designed to change physician competence in areas identified in the needs assessments, including cardiac, neurologic, trauma, pediatric, elderly and general medical emergencies.
Course Objectives: At the end of the activity, participants should be able to:
  • Apply pertinent medical knowledge in adult and pediatric diagnosis and resuscitation.
  • Discuss current topics in pediatric care including trauma evaluation, asthma, and pulmonary infections.
  • Explain the management of patients with abdominal pain, pediatric respiratory complaints, airway emergencies, mental health crises, syncope, abnormal EKGs, pediatric trauma, and abnormal vital signs.
  • Outline the approach to managing the airway with state-of-the-art equipment.
  • Perform a variety of vascular access techniques.
  • Utilize ultrasound in the diagnosis of trauma patients.
  • Choose current dosing regimens for patients who require medications.
  • Identify and safely evaluate and restrain patients with mental health crises.
  • Identify novel EKG findings.
