Activity Name:	Medical Care of Vulnerable and Underserved Populations
Needs Assessment:	The disparities in health and health care in socially disadvantaged patients, often termed vulnerable or underserved, have been demonstrated through examination of public health data (Aday,1993), and the quality of both processes and outcome of care ( AHRQ,2007). Each of our lecture and workshop topics addresses an area where a need for improvement in care and in provider training has been documented-- whether it be the care of those with substance use problems, HIV, intimate partner violence or those with obesity (Healthy People 2010).
Course Objectives:	This course will offer the theoretical background and practical knowledge required to teach healthcare providers to care for vulnerable, underserved patients both at the individual and system levels. Attendees will obtain an understanding of the complex nature of the problem of caring for vulnerable, underserved patients, an appreciation of the need to address disparities at multiple levels, and suggestions for practical approaches to improve the care of vulnerable populations. We aim to ?enable? healthcare practitioners to contribute to the solution. We focus on issues of patient care that are common amongst underserved patients and suggest ways to use our materials as teaching tools for health professions trainees in both didactic and clinical settings.
