12th Annual UC Davis Psychotic Disorders Conference
Needs Assessment:
While the focus of management of people with psychotic illness has been on symptom control, employment of new models of care delivery including early psychosis specialty care have brought an emphasis on improving functioning in people with serious mental illness. You will receive an update on new approaches from the nation?s leading experts in the field. Lectures will cover recent advancements in the assessment of functioning as well as novel therapies such as cognitive rehabilitation and supported education. This conference will provide new insights from the field of psychiatric neuroscience. Genetics are a major contributing factor to the causes of serious mental illness and there have been major advances in this field over the past few years. These advances will be reviewed by UC Davis? expert psychiatric geneticist. Finally, aggression and violence are rare but serious complications of serious mental illness. We will explore the complex relationship between these two factors as well as new clinical approaches to addressing them.
Course Objectives:
At the end of the activity, participants should be able to:
Discuss new approaches to medication management for serious mental illness.
Assessing and managing the emotions and negative symptoms in schizophrenia.
Be familiar with the insights that new advances in our understanding of the genetics of serious mental illness.
Analyze the data on adolescent brain development and mental health risks.
Recommend interventions for young adults with autism spectrum disorder.
Discuss and assess the use of telepsychiatry for remote patient care.
