Tropical Medicine Update for Savvy Clinicians
Activity Details
Activity Name: Tropical Medicine Update for Savvy Clinicians
Needs Assessment:

As global travel, migration, and commerce continue to rise, American physicians need up-to-date information about tropical infectious diseases. Some conditions (for example, Chagas disease, echinococcosis, cysticercosis, strongyloidiasis, leprosy) remain silent for years before patients become symptomatic; other travel-associated infections such as malaria, typhoid fever, or leptospirosis can progress quickly, requiring swift recognition and treatment. Today, even local or imported food can transmit tropical pathogens. Accordingly, the overarching goal of “Tropical Medicine Update for Savvy Clinicians” is to provide cutting-edge knowledge about these and other tropical infections in order to assure timely, accurate diagnoses and treatment here in the U.S.

Course Objectives:
  • Apply current clinical and epidemiologic knowledge in recognizing tropical infectious diseases in patients seen in the U.S.
  • Utilize modern strategies for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of tropical infectious diseases seen in the U.S.
  • Develop a differential diagnosis for a returning traveler with fever and initiate diagnostic tests and treatment
  • Appreciate new patterns of drug resistance in malaria and select appropriate antimalarial prophylaxis
  • Apply modern diagnostic tests for malaria and initiate treatment
  • Develop a differential diagnosis and initiate work-up and treatment for travelers and expatriates with eosinophilia
  • Recognize the varied features of Chagas disease and apply current guidelines for diagnosis and treatment
  • Identify a wide range of dermatologic disorders contracted in the tropics
  • Identify common manifestations of leprosy and refer patients for treatment
  • Diagnose common forms of leishmaniasis and refer patients for treatment
