As global travel, migration, and commerce continue to rise, American physicians need up-to-date information about tropical infectious diseases. Some conditions (for example, Chagas disease, echinococcosis, cysticercosis, strongyloidiasis, leprosy) remain silent for years before patients become symptomatic; other travel-associated infections such as malaria, typhoid fever, or leptospirosis can progress quickly, requiring swift recognition and treatment. Today, even local or imported food can transmit tropical pathogens.
