Sexual Assault Forensic Examiner Recruitment and Retention (SAFERR)
Sexual Assault Forensic Examiner Recruitment and Retention (SAFERR) is a program led by the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) School of Nursing (SON) designed to strengthen the care for victims of sexual assault. Sexual Assault Forensic Examiner Recruitment and Retention (SAFERR)

Introduction
Sexual Assault Forensic Examiner Recruitment and Retention (SAFERR) is a program led by the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) School of Nursing (SON) designed to strengthen the care for victims of sexual assault. The program’s objectives are to:

1) prepare nurses, advanced practice nurses, physician assistants, and physicians to become sexual assault forensic examiners (SAFE) through development of an innovative, standardized curriculum;
2) expand the number of SAFEs through training providers.

This activity is targeted to nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and physicians who care for patients in a variety of settings, including outpatient clinics and hospitals. 

The online SAFERR program consists of seven short modules. The entire curriculum will take about five hours to complete, and you can do so at your own pace. Modules included are:

  1. Consent and Confidentiality
  2. Trauma-Informed Care
  3. Trauma-Informed Pelvic Exam
  4. Evidence Based Practice for STI Prophylaxis in Sexual Assault Care
  5. Working with Patients Who Identify as Gender Nonbinary or Transgender
  6. Strangulation
  7. Sex Trafficking
 

Learning Objectives
At the end of this activity, the participant should be able to:

  1. Apply tenants of trauma informed care to providing care for survivors of sexual assault
  2. Demonstrate confidence in talking with patients about their traumatic experiences
  3. Demonstrate increased knowledge of providing medical services to survivors of sexual assault
 

Dates of Certification
This activity is valid for credit from June 1, 2021 (release date) until May 31, 2024 (expiration date).

Accreditation
The University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine (UCSF) is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

UCSF designates this enduring material for a maximum of 5.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™.  Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Nurse Practitioners and Registered Nurses: For the purpose of recertification, the American Nurses Credentialing Center accepts AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ issued by organizations accredited by the ACCME.

Physician Assistants: The National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) states that the AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ are acceptable for continuing medical education requirements for recertification.

California Pharmacists: The California Board of Pharmacy accepts as continuing professional education those courses that meet the standard of relevance to pharmacy practice and have been approved for AMA PRA category 1 credit™. If you are a pharmacist in another state, you should check with your state board for approval of this credit.
