Educational Goals

The goal of this session is to increase knowledge about geographic disparities in smoking and smoking-attributable outcomes in the U.S., to increase knowledge about the relationships between differential exposure to tobacco control policies and geographic disparities in smoking-attributable outcomes, and to understand how simulation modeling can help inform tobacco control policy efforts.


Learning Objectives

At the end of this activity, the participant should be able to:

  1. Describe “Tobacco Nation,” a group of 13 states in the South and Midwest of the United States which have disproportionately high rates of smoking compared to the rest of the US.
  2. Describe the expected trajectory of geographic disparities between Tobacco Nation and the rest of the US over 20 years in the absence of policy change (status quo scenario).
  3. Describe expected trajectory of geographic disparities over 20 years if Tobacco Nation states were to implement increased cigarette taxes and tobacco control expenditures (policy scenario).
  4. Compare status quo and policy scenarios to understand the potential impacts of strengthening tobacco control policies in Tobacco Nation.

This 60-minute webinar will address the following high-level topics. (More details can be found in the downloadable syllabus.)
  1. Background of Tobacco Nation
  2. Methods to project smoking-attributable health outcomes
  3. Results of the methods
  4. Subgroup analysis of results
  5. Discussion of the results

How to Participate and Earn CE/CME Credit

The estimated time to complete this activity is 60 minutes, which is equivalent to 1.00 credit. Participants should view the recorded webinar (streaming or downloading the .mp4 file), answer the multiple-choice test questions, and complete the evaluation form online to receive a certificate. 

You must receive a score of 80% or better to earn a certificate. You will have an unlimited number of attempts to successfully complete the post-test.  Your certificate will be available immediately for print or download upon completion of the entire activity.

Cancellations and Refunds: Cancellations should be made in writing within 7 days of enrollment. Refunds will only be made in the event that technical difficulties prevent completion of the activity, or if no interaction with the material occurred because of inadvertent or mistaken enrollment, or expiration of the activity before the learner had the opportunity to complete it fully. Fees can be transferred to another activity in the case of mistaken enrollment.

Accreditations
The University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine (UCSF) is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
