    Educational Goals

    Rx for Change: Clinician-Assisted Tobacco Cessation is a comprehensive tobacco cessation training program that equips health professional students and practicing clinicians, of all disciplines, with evidence-based knowledge and skills for assisting patients with quitting.


    Learning Objectives

    At the end of this activity, the participant should be able to:

    1. List five health risks associated with chronic tobacco use.
    2. Describe alternative nicotine delivery systems (ANDS) and understand health risks associated with these products.
    3. Review pharmacodynamics of nicotine in the body and its role in addiction.
    4. Recognize drug interactions with tobacco smoke.
    5. Understand the 5 A’s for promoting tobacco cessation among patients: Ask, Advise, Assess, Assist, and Arrange.
    6. Compare various tobacco cessation medications, including the safety and efficacy data, for the management of cessation.
    7. Develop a treatment regimen that incorporates the most effective medications for tobacco cessation, including drugs, doses, routes, and frequency of administration.
    8. Counsel a tobacco user on the proper use of the all first-line pharmacologic agents (including dosing, instructions on use, potential side effects, and precautions).
    9. Describe the services provided by the tobacco quitline (1-800-QUIT NOW).

    Method of Participation/ Instruction for Obtaining Credit

    Participants should view the recorded materials (streaming or downloading the .mp4 file), answer the multiple-choice test questions after each module, and complete the evaluation form online to receive a certificate. 

    You must receive a score of 70-80% or better to earn a certificate. You will have an unlimited number of attempts to successfully complete each post-test.  Your certificate will be available immediately for print or download upon completion of the entire curriculum.

    No cost to participants, courtesy of the National Cancer Institute and the University of California San Francisco Smoking Cessation Leadership Center.

    Physicians

    The University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine (UCSF) is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

    UCSF designates this enduring material for a maximum of 4.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™.  Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

    Pharmacists

    The University of California, San Francisco School of Pharmacy is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) as a provider of continuing pharmacy education.

    Nurse Practitioners and Registered Nurses: For the purpose of recertification, the American Nurses Credentialing Center accepts AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ issued by organizations accredited by the ACCME.

    Physician Assistants: The National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) states that the AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ are acceptable for continuing medical education requirements for recertification.

    California Psychologists: This educational activity is recognized by the California Board of Psychology as meeting the continuing education requirements toward license renewal for California psychologists. Psychologists are responsible for reporting their own attendance to the California Board of Psychology. Psychologists from other states should check with their respective licensing boards.

    California Behavioral Science Professionals: The University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine (UCSF) is approved by the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists to sponsor continuing education for Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSW), Licensed Clinical Marriage and Family Therapists (LMFT), Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC) and Licensed Educational Psychologists (LEP). UCSF maintains responsibility for this program/course and its content.     California Addiction Professionals:

    Cancellations and Refunds: Cancellations should be made in writing within 7 days of enrollment. Refunds will only be made in the event that technical difficulties prevent completion of the activity, or if no interaction with the material occurred because of inadvertent or mistaken enrollment, or expiration of the activity before the learner had the opportunity to complete it fully. Fees can be transferred to another activity in the case of mistaken enrollment.
