Cessation efforts aimed at helping African American can no longer be taught/counseled as a neutral health intervention that waits passively until the patient is ready to set a quit date. Cessation counselors, people who smoke, and the broader community must understand the historical and political context of the tobacco epidemic and how to incorporate these issues into cessation efforts.
Attendees will have a better understanding of the pernicious racist targeting of African Americans with mentholated tobacco products. They will be able to incorporate and address these issues into cessation counseling. Hopefully attendees will advocate for more resources and innovation in cessation treatment and methodology.
